Your Day-by-Day Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival in Zimbabwe — Your African Adventure Begins at Victoria Falls

Touch down in Zimbabwe and feel Africa embrace you from the moment you step off the plane. You’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your accommodation — a chance to exhale, unpack, and let the anticipation build. As the sun sets over the Batoka Gorge, we head out for dinner at the iconic Lookout Café, perched dramatically above the gorge with a front-row view of the Zambezi River below.

DAY 2

Victoria Falls, Vulture Feeding & Crossing into Zambia

Wake up to the roar of one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. This morning we walk the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls — spray on your face, thunder in your chest. Mosi-oa-Tunya, 'The Smoke That Thunders’, lives up to every word of its name. After the falls, lunch with a front-row seat to the famous vulture feeding — raw, wild, and utterly unforgettable. In the afternoon we cross into Zambia and check into our accommodation in Livingstone, gateway to the greatest stretch of whitewater on earth.

DAY 3

Elephant Interaction at Elephant Café & Sunset at Royal Livingstone

Today belongs to elephants and golden light. We visit the Elephant Café — a unique sanctuary where these magnificent animals are raised with patience, kindness, and zero violence. You’ll feed them, touch them, and look them in the eye — moments that leave grown adults completely speechless. After lunch we head to the legendary Royal Livingstone Hotel where giraffes wander the grounds at will as the sun melts into the spray covering Victoria Falls.

DAY 4

Devil’s Pool Victoria Falls & Sunset Safari Cruise on the Zambezi River

Brace yourself — today is not for the faint-hearted. We head to the legendary Devil’s Pool, a natural rock pool sitting at the very lip of Victoria Falls, where you can lie on the edge and peer 100 metres straight down into the gorge below. The afternoon brings contrast and calm: a sunset safari cruise on the upper Zambezi, drifting past hippos, crocodiles, and elephants as the sky turns amber and pink.

DAY 5

Rest Day in Livingstone — Optional Adventure Activities at Victoria Falls

Consider this your breath before the plunge. Sleep in, find a sun lounger, and let Africa slow you down. Or don’t — bungee jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge (111 metres), swing through the gorge, take a helicopter flight over the falls, glide in a motor glider, or fish the Zambezi. Your guide will help you make the most of every hour.

Optional activities are not included in the tour price.

DAY 6

Zambezi Whitewater Rafting Begins — Boiling Pot to Rapid #10

This is it. After a hearty breakfast we descend to the Boiling Pot — a churning cauldron directly beneath Victoria Falls accessible only to those willing to make the journey. We raft upstream through a massive whirlpool to witness Victoria Falls from the very base of the gorge — a perspective almost no one on earth has experienced. Then we turn downstream and the real adventure begins: rapid after rapid of the biggest commercially rafted whitewater in the world. We make camp after Rapid #10 as the gorge walls rise around you and the stars take over the sky.

DAY 7

Zambezi River Rafting — Navigating Rapids #11–#25 & Camping on the Beach

Another day, another stretch of legendary Zambezi whitewater. Rapids #11 through #25 await — each one named, each with its own personality. Lunch is served riverside as the Batoka Gorge towers above us. As the afternoon light turns golden we pull into camp on a wide white sandy beach. Sunset drinks, dinner over an open fire, a campfire crackling in the gorge. African camping at its absolute finest.

DAY 8

Into the Wild Zambezi — 24km Through Uncharted Rapids to Moemba Falls

Today we go where very few ever go. After breakfast we push off for our longest day — 24 kilometres through a rarely rafted section of the Zambezi that most expeditions never reach. The gorge deepens, the crowds disappear, and the river becomes something ancient and untamed. In the afternoon we reach Upper Moemba Falls, one of the most spectacular rapids on the entire river. Tonight we camp beside Lower Moemba, falling asleep to the roar of one of Africa’s great wild rivers.

DAY 9

Breaking Camp at Lower Moemba — The Hike Out of the Batoka Gorge

The morning begins slowly — packing up camp on the banks of Lower Moemba as the Zambezi murmurs its farewell beside you. This is your last morning deep inside the canyon, and every minute of it counts. After a final breakfast in the gorge with those extraordinary walls rising around you, comes the hike out: a 30–90 minute climb from the canyon floor back up to the world above. Steep, honest, and worth every burning step. Legs aching, lungs full of Africa, grinning from ear to ear — we drive back through traditional Zambian villages to Livingstone, sun-baked, exhausted, and already planning the return.

Helicopter return from the canyon is available at an additional cost.

DAY 10

Rest & Recovery in Livingstone After the Zambezi Rafting Expedition

You’ve earned this. A real bed, a hot shower, and the simple luxury of doing absolutely nothing. Sleep late, float in the pool, and let your muscles remember what rest feels like. Your guide can arrange excursions, spa treatments, or a gentle exploration of vibrant Livingstone town.

DAY 11

Chobe National Park Botswana — Arrival, River Boat Safari & First Game Drive

After breakfast we set off for Botswana and Chobe National Park — home to the largest elephant population on the planet, where herds of hundreds gather along the Chobe River. We settle into our fully equipped bush camp before heading out on a boat safari: elephants swimming across the channel, hippos surfacing feet from the boat, crocodiles sunning on the banks. Alongside elephants, keep your eyes open for lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, African wild dogs, and over 450 species of birds.

DAY 12

Chobe Safari — Early Morning & Afternoon Game Drives in Botswana

Rise before the sun. The African bush at dawn is a different world — cool air, birdsong, and animals moving freely before the heat sets in. We enter the park at first light: lions returning from the hunt, elephants at the river, leopards slipping between the trees. After a midday rest, we head out again as the golden hour transforms the savannah into something extraordinary. Every drive is different. Every sighting is a gift.

DAY 13

Final Chobe Game Drive, Boma Dinner & Return to Zambia

One last early morning in the park — one final chance for the sighting of a lifetime. Then we cross back into Zambia. That evening, we gather for the Boma dinner: a traditional open-air enclosure lit by flickering firelight and alive with the sounds of the African night. Local drummers set the rhythm as you feast on spit-roasted meats and exotic game dishes including buffalo and impala, all under a sky blazing with stars. Tribal dancers perform stories passed down through generations, and if you’re brave enough, a village elder will give you your very own African name.

DAY 14

Departure — Farewell to Africa, Until Next Time

The adventure may be ending, but Africa has a way of staying with you. We depart early for the airport, bags full of dust and memories, hearts already planning the return. Until next time, Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions — Zambezi Expedition

Is This the Right Trip for Me?

This is the crème de la crème of adventure travel in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. We’ve hand-picked our favourite and most exciting experiences and built the trip we’ve always dreamed of ourselves. It’s packed with adventure, but most activities require only a moderate level of physical fitness. The rafting is exhilarating but guided — you don’t need prior experience. If you have any concerns or medical questions, just get in touch and we’ll be honest with you.Do I Need Whitewater Rafting Experience?

Do I Need Whitewater Rafting Experience?

No prior rafting experience is necessary. The Zambezi is one of the most exhilarating rivers in the world, but our professional guides will brief you fully before every section and are with you every step of the way. What you need: a reasonable level of fitness, the ability to swim, and a sense of adventure. How Do I Get There? Which Airport Should I Fly To?

How Do I Get There? Which Airport Should I Fly To?

We recommend flying into Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe — it’s the most direct gateway and puts you right at the heart of the action from day one. Most major international routes connect via Johannesburg (South Africa). Once you land, we handle all transfers throughout the trip. What Should I Pack for the Zambezi Expedition?

What Should I Pack for the Zambezi Expedition?

  • High-SPF sunscreen and a wide-brim sun hat
  • Sturdy hiking shoes or sandals with grip for the gorge and safari
  • Light, breathable clothing — long sleeves protect from sun and insects
  • A light rain jacket or waterproof layer (tropical downpours happen)
  • Insect repellent
  • A dry bag or waterproof case for your phone/camera on the raft
  • Personal toiletries and any prescription medications
  • A reusable water bottle

Not sure what to bring? Email us and we’ll send you our full packing list. Will My Valuables and Documents Be Safe?

Will My Valuables and Documents Be Safe?

All accommodations have secure storage for passports, documents, and valuables. That said, we always recommend travelling with only what you need and keeping important items locked away. Zambia is a welcoming and friendly country, but as with any travel destination, basic common sense goes a long way. What Vaccinations and Health Precautions Do I Need?

What Vaccinations and Health Precautions Do I Need?

We are guides, not doctors — and we’ll always say so! Please consult your GP or a travel health clinic well before your departure date. They will advise on recommended vaccinations (including yellow fever and typhoid) and whether antimalarial medication is right for you. We recommend doing this at least 6–8 weeks before travel. What’s the Weather Like? When Is the Best Time to Visit?

What’s the Weather Like? When Is the Best Time to Visit?

The LiLi Zambezi Expedition runs at the start of the dry season — warm, mostly sunny days with the occasional dramatic tropical downpour (usually at night). Expect hot days of 30–35°C, warm water for rafting, and pleasantly cool evenings. The Zambezi is at a great level for rafting during this period. Bring light clothing, solid sun protection, and one waterproof layer just in case. When it rains in Zambia, it means business — but it’s usually over quickly. Will There Be Crocodiles and Hippos in the Rafting Section?

Will There Be Crocodiles and Hippos in the Rafting Section?

In the Batoka Gorge section below Victoria Falls, you may encounter small and medium-sized crocodiles — though sightings are rare and the fast-moving water means they tend to stay away from the rafting corridor. There are no hippos in the gorge section where we raft. On the safari sections and boat cruise, however, we very much hope to see hippos in all their magnificent, territorial glory — from a safe distance on the water. What Animals Can I Expect to See on Safari in Chobe?

What Animals Can I Expect to See on Safari in Chobe?

Chobe National Park is one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations. Expect to see elephants in enormous herds (Chobe has the highest concentration in the world), lions, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, and if you’re very lucky — leopards and the rare African wild dog. The park also hosts over 450 bird species, making it a paradise for wildlife photographers. The boat safari on the Chobe River is particularly spectacular. How Big Are the Groups?

How Big Are the Groups?

We deliberately keep our groups small — typically between 6 and 12 people. This means a more personal experience, better access to guides, and the flexibility to adapt the trip to the group. It also means spaces fill up quickly, so we recommend booking early. What Happens if I Need to Cancel or Change My Booking?

What Happens if I Need to Cancel or Change My Booking?

Life happens — we get it. Our cancellation and amendment policy is outlined in your booking confirmation. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers cancellation, medical emergencies, and trip interruption. If something unexpected comes up, get in touch with us as early as possible and we’ll do everything we can to help.Is This Trip Suitable for Solo Travellers?

Is This Trip Suitable for Solo Travellers?

Absolutely. Many of our guests travel solo and find it one of the best ways to meet like-minded adventurers. Our small-group format means you’ll have companions from day one. Solo supplements may apply — contact us for current pricing.

Ready to Make It Real?

Spaces on each Zambezi Expedition are strictly limited — we keep groups small so every person gets the experience they came for. If this itinerary is calling to you, don’t wait.
